Gayton McKenzie Digs in Demands for Home Affairs Ministry in Coalition Talks
Midrand, South Africa – Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie has reaffirmed his party’s stance on their participation in coalition governments, insisting that the Ministry of Home Affairs is a non-negotiable requirement.
Speaking at the Independent Electoral Commission’s Results Operations Centre in Midrand, McKenzie expressed satisfaction with the PA’s performance in the 2024 general elections. The party secured 2.5% of the national vote, translating to nine seats in the National Assembly.
“Our Growth is Unstoppable,” Says McKenzie
McKenzie took pride in the party’s growth over the past years. “From 652 votes in the Western Cape in 2019 to 145,913 in 2024. We’re stronger, more confident and will be ready for 2026!” he exclaimed on social media platform X.
The PA has grown significantly, with over 300,000 votes and legislative seats in four provinces. Their leader emphasised that their ambition to acquire the Ministry of Home Affairs and their Deputy President Kenny Kunene’s appointment as a key condition for any coalition agreement.
Coalition with Conditions
“Our coalition terms are clear. The ANC has no choice but to accept that,” McKenzie stated firmly. He also suggested that the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) Deputy President Floyd Shivambu should be appointed as the Minister of Finance.
McKenzie was unwavering, “One thing for us that’s a non-negotiable, don’t waste our time and airtime to call us if you want illegal foreigners to stay, mabahambe.”
Criticism and Accusations
The PA leader did not hold back as he criticised other political factions. “The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape is corrupt. They have stolen our votes.” The PA has long been vocal about their stance on illegal foreign nationals, calling for mass deportations.
Furthermore, McKenzie stirred the pot on social media, claiming, “President Zuma & MK will be the biggest beneficiary of an ANC/DA coalition. He already has a plan for such an eventuality. He told ANC councillors who wanted to join MK to stay put until he calls them. The ANC’s death is being planned by business with full permission of half of the ANC.”
Future of Coalitions
“The DA is running after the ANC now,” McKenzie remarked as he charted the contentious political landscape. The PA leader remains adamant about their coalition prerequisites, asserting the party’s significant leverage as a coalition partner.
