Owen Da Gama Appointed as Magesi FC Head Coach Amidst Struggles in Betway Premiership

Magesi FC

Magesi FC has appointed seasoned coach Owen Da Gama as their new head coach, following the resignation of Clinton Larsen. Larsen stepped down after a 3-0 loss to the Carling All Stars in the Carling Cup on 21 December 2024.

Initially, assistant coach Papi Zothwane was named interim head coach. However, the club has now opted for the more experienced Da Gama to lead the team.

Background and Recent Performance

Magesi FC, based in Limpopo, has faced a challenging season in the Betway Premiership. The team is currently at the bottom of the standings, enduring a six-match winless streak, including three consecutive losses. Their most recent league defeat was a 1-0 loss to SuperSport United.

The club’s offensive struggles are evident, averaging only 0.44 goals per game this season. This lack of scoring has been a significant factor in their current league position.

Owen Da Gama’s Coaching Profile

Owen Da Gama, born on 18 August 1961, is a South African former footballer and a highly experienced coach. His coaching career includes stints with prominent clubs such as Orlando Pirates, Free State Stars, Bloemfontein Celtic, Platinum Stars, Dynamos FC, Highlands Park, TS Galaxy, and Sekhukhune United. Additionally, Da Gama has served as the head coach for Bafana Bafana and the South African U23 men’s national team.

His extensive experience in South African football is expected to bring strategic insight and leadership to Magesi FC during this critical period.

Immediate Challenges and Upcoming Fixtures

Da Gama’s immediate focus will be on reversing the team’s fortunes and addressing their offensive challenges. Improving the team’s goal-scoring capabilities will be crucial to climbing out of the relegation zone.

Magesi FC’s next fixture is scheduled for 29 December 2024, where they will face Orlando Pirates. This match presents an opportunity for the team to break their current losing streak and begin a positive trajectory under Da Gama’s guidance.

Support from Club Management and Fans

The club’s management has expressed confidence in Da Gama’s ability to steer the team through this transitional phase. Supporters are hopeful that his leadership will reinvigorate the squad and improve their standing in the league.
