In a major crackdown on crime, police in Gauteng have arrested over 900 suspects during the high-density Operation Shanela, led by Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni. The operation, which took place over the weekend, targeted a wide range of serious offences, showcasing the province’s commitment to tackling crime head-on.

The arrested individuals were involved in a variety of serious crimes, including murder, attempted murder, rape, business robbery, drug dealing, possession of drugs, assault, hijacking, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. This large-scale operation was the result of a collaborative effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Department of Home Affairs, Department of Correctional Services, Gauteng Traffic Police, Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD), Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens, Community Policing Forum, and private security companies.

Targeted Raids and Strategic Roadblocks

Operation Shanela commenced on Saturday with a focus on high-crime areas, leading to the arrest of over 600 suspects wanted for various crimes across the province. Among these, 117 arrests were related to gender-based violence, a serious concern in the region. The operation also featured strategic roadblocks and targeted raids aimed at capturing individuals involved in violent and organised crime.

Lieutenant General Mthombeni personally oversaw roadblocks in Mamelodi East and West, areas within the Tshwane District known for high rates of violent crimes such as murder, assault, hijacking, and robbery. His presence underscored the operation’s importance and the commitment of the Gauteng police force to restoring safety in these communities.

Tshwane District Focus

The Tshwane District was a key focus of the operation, resulting in significant arrests. Police apprehended 43 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol, while 79 illegal immigrants were detained. Additionally, two suspects were arrested for drug dealing, one for employing illegal immigrants, and another for dealing in illicit cigarettes. Law enforcement also took action against non-compliant businesses, closing 10 unlicensed liquor outlets in the area.

Ongoing Efforts to Combat Crime

Operation Shanela is part of a broader strategy by Gauteng law enforcement to significantly reduce crime in the province. The high-density operation will continue until a meaningful decrease in criminal activity is achieved. The success of the weekend’s operation highlights the effectiveness of coordinated efforts and the importance of maintaining a strong law enforcement presence in crime-prone areas.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear before various Magistrates’ Courts across the province, where they will face charges for their alleged crimes. The operation has been hailed as a significant step towards making Gauteng a safer place for all its residents.
