Over 7,000 Arrests Made on South African Roads During Festive Season

South African Roads During Festive Season

Between 1 December 2024 and 1 January 2025, South African law enforcement agencies arrested 7,448 individuals for various traffic offences nationwide. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) reported that these offences included drunk driving, speeding, and attempted bribery.

Provincial Breakdown of Offences

• Eastern Cape: Authorities arrested 455 individuals for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
• Limpopo: The highest recorded speed violation occurred, with a motorist apprehended for driving at 209 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.

Official Statement

RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane confirmed the arrest figures and emphasized the importance of road safety:

“There have also been arrests of pedestrians who have been caught crossing the road, or jaywalking, on dangerous routes. Therefore, the RTMC calls on motorists to be extra vigilant, to be patient, and to respect the rules of the roads.”

National Safer Festive Season Operations

In response to the high volume of traffic and associated risks during the holiday period, the Department of Transport launched the National Safer Festive Season Operations on 1 December 2024. This 46-day campaign aims to increase police visibility across the country, especially in high-risk zones, to enhance road safety.

Road Safety Statistics

Despite these efforts, there has been a reported 3% increase in road accidents and fatalities during this festive season compared to the previous year. Transport Minister Barbara Creecy noted that since 1 December, there have been 426 crashes involving fatalities, resulting in 512 deaths. Notably, 45% of these fatalities are pedestrians.

Call to Action

The RTMC urges all road users to adhere strictly to traffic laws, exercise patience, and remain vigilant to reduce accidents and fatalities. Motorists are reminded to avoid driving under the influence, observe speed limits, and refrain from attempting to bribe law enforcement officers.
