North West, South Africa – Operation Shanela has led to the arrest of 793 suspects in the North West Province, highlighting the ongoing efforts to curb crime and maintain law and order. The operation, which ran from Monday, 15 July 2024, to Sunday, 21 July 2024, involved comprehensive stop-and-search operations, roadblocks, and inspections across the province.
A Breakdown of the Arrests
The arrests covered a range of serious offences, showcasing the operation’s breadth and effectiveness. Among the 793 suspects arrested, a significant number were apprehended for grave crimes:
• Contact Crimes: 347 suspects were wanted for crimes such as murder, attempted murder, rape, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, common assault, house robbery, and business robbery.
• Driving Under the Influence: 54 individuals were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
• Undocumented Persons: 29 individuals without proper documentation were taken in for processing.
Seized Items and Inspections
The operation also resulted in the confiscation of various illegal items and contraband:
• Weapons and Ammunition: Four handguns and associated ammunition were seized.
• Vehicles: Three vehicles were confiscated.
• Drugs and Dangerous Weapons: A variety of drugs and dangerous weapons were taken off the streets.
• Copper Cables: 11kg of copper cables were recovered.
• Liquor and Tobacco: Various quantities of liquor and tobacco products were also confiscated.
Execution of the Operation
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the arrests and seizures were made possible through coordinated actions, including:
• Stop-and-search operations
• Roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints
• Inspections of 56 licensed liquor premises and 13 second-hand goods dealers
• Tracing of wanted suspects
Commendation from the Provincial Police Commissioner
Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the Provincial Police Commissioner, commended the police officers involved in Operation Shanela for their dedication and hard work. “I congratulate our officers for their tireless efforts and dedication in ensuring the safety of our communities. Their commitment to putting suspects behind bars is commendable and a testament to the SAPS’s unwavering resolve to fight crime,” he said.
