Over the weekend, over 650 people were detained in Gauteng by the South African Police Service’s Operation Shanela.
The Gauteng Police Common Magistrate, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela was joined by the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Ms. Confidence Mazibuko as he drove one more High Density Activity which brought about the capture of in excess of 650 suspects who have been on the pursued carrying out serious and vicious violations that incorporate homicide, equipped burglaries, assault, extortion, attack with goal to inflict damage, housebreaking and burglary.
The detectives were tracing wanted individuals when these suspects were apprehended in the first phase of the operation.
In the second phase of the operation, integrated law enforcement agencies set up roadblocks to look for stolen and hijacked vehicles and ensure that no illegal goods or substances were being transported by road users.
Police Spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, says during the roadblock in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni District, 26 people were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, two cars that were suspected to be stolen were seized and 14 undocumented persons were taken in to be processed by officials from the Department of Home Affairs.
“A total number of 1970 suspects were arrested in Gauteng over the weekend. More than 480 people were arrested in Johannesburg District over the weekend.”
In the meantime, weekend operations were also carried out in other districts, with 970 people arrested in Tshwane District, 242 in Ekurhuleni District, 184 in West Rand District, and 87 in Sedibeng District.
In due course, suspects who have been arrested will appear in various Magistrate’s Courts.
