In a press conference hosted in Pretoria on Sunday, 07 April 2024, Police Minister General Bheki Cele unveiled the stunning successes of SAPS counter operations, highlighting the arrest of over half a million suspected criminals through Operation Shanela.
General Cele opened the conference with a commitment to fighting crime through “decisive police action and robust community involvement,” acknowledging the unacceptable levels of crime and the community’s pleas for SAPS to respond decisively.

“In the past couple of days, SAPS has intercepted armed and dangerous gangs,” Cele stated, showcasing the ministry’s firm stance against crime. He detailed a shocking encounter in Mariannhill, Kwa-Zulu Natal, where a group of eleven youngsters left nine dead during an arrest, and in Witbank, Mpumalanga, a thwarted cash-in-transit heist ended with five suspects killed and eight arrested.
Cele condemned the criminals’ arrogance and ruthlessness, especially those who dare to challenge the authority of the state by attacking police officers. He assured that police remain unapologetic in their aggressive response to crime, pledging continued protection for communities and a hard pushback against criminality.
Highlighting significant police operations, Cele shared insights into the 1,171 intelligence-led takedowns conducted by SAPS since April 2023. These operations have led to considerable successes, including the dismantling of gang cartels in the Western Cape, breakthroughs in high-profile murder cases, and arrests connected to the Fort Hare murders and corruption in the Nongoma local municipality.
Moreover, Operation Shanela, introduced in May 2023, has been pivotal in combating crime through high-density operations across the country. To date, 551,506 suspects have been arrested for various crimes, with a significant number of arrests for serious offenses like rape, murder, and drug-related crimes. Through ‘Operation Vala umgodi’, a multidisciplinary effort, 3,298 illegal miners were arrested, showing the extensive reach of SAPS operations.
Amidst these successes, the ministry faces challenges, including the tragic loss of 109 police officers over the past 11 months, with 36 killed during active policing. Cele announced the arrest of 83 suspects in connection with these killings, underlining the risks faced by officers daily.
The ministry’s staunch support for police action has not gone without controversy, particularly concerning operations resulting in the death of suspects. However, Cele emphasized the importance of independent investigations into police actions and reiterated the ministry’s unwavering support for officers on the front lines.
“Our message is clear, NO POLICE OFFICER SHOULD DIE WITH A GUN in their hand,” Cele firmly stated, calling for continued vigilance and resilience from the police force.
As Cele concluded, he underscored the administration’s commitment to improving working conditions and wellness for officers, recognizing the nation’s deep appreciation for the dangerous, yet indispensable work carried out by the SAPS.
