Operation Shanela
The Free State police have made significant progress in their fight against crime through Operation Shanela, resulting in the arrest of 1070 individuals from 14 to 20 August 2023.
This aggressive policing approach has been effective in reducing crime rates, a fact that has been welcomed by communities.
Minister of Police, during his speech, commended the success of Operation Shanela, stating that the high-density operations have shown positive results in tackling crime. To maintain this level of aggressiveness, roadblocks and stop-and-search operations will continue throughout the province.
Among the arrested individuals, 56 were charged with malicious damage to property. Additionally, enforcement of the Second Hand Goods Act led to the arrest of 17 individuals for contravening the Act, and 18 individuals were arrested for the possession of suspected stolen goods.
In a significant operation against illegal firearms, seven individuals were apprehended, and the police were able to seize 12 handguns. The police also successfully arrested seven suspects for murder, with a further seven being booked for attempted murder. Furthermore, 158 arrests were made for assault-related offenses.
The success of Operation Shanela is based on a combination of raids, intelligence-led information, and detective detection operations. As a result, 51 individuals were arrested for drug-related crimes, while 410 suspects were apprehended for various offenses. Additionally, 103 undocumented individuals were taken into custody, and 49 others were arrested through the police force’s multi-disciplinary approach.
