Oshoek Border
By Lerato Mpembe
The Oshoek Border Post, a critical gateway between South Africa and Eswatini, has resumed operations following a significant truck accident that temporarily halted cross-border movement. The incident, which occurred over the weekend, involved a 32-ton coal truck that reportedly experienced brake failure, leading to a collision with multiple vehicles and infrastructure damage at the port of entry.
Details of the Incident
On Sunday morning, at approximately 10:20 am, a coal-laden truck descending towards Eswatini on the departure side of the Oshoek Port allegedly suffered brake failure. This mechanical malfunction resulted in the truck crashing into 10 stationary private vehicles, four South African Revenue Service (SARS) vehicles, and one South African National Defence Force (SANDF) bakkie, causing significant damage. Additionally, two guardhouses and an inspection shelter were damaged in the collision.
Casualties and Immediate Response
Three individuals sustained injuries during the incident: a SARS official, a tourism monitor, and the truck driver. They received prompt medical attention from Eswatini Emergency Medical Services and were transported to a hospital in Eswatini for immediate treatment. All three are reported to be recovering well.
Temporary Suspension of Operations
In the aftermath of the accident, the Border Management Authority (BMA) and SARS took the precautionary measure of temporarily suspending operations at the Oshoek Port of Entry. This suspension allowed for thorough investigations by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and safety assessments by disaster management teams to ensure the well-being of all stakeholders.
Resumption of Services
Following comprehensive safety evaluations and necessary repairs, BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato announced the immediate resumption of operations at the Oshoek Border Post. He stated, “All port operations have resumed with immediate effect, allowing for the seamless movement of travellers and goods between South Africa and Eswatini.”
Alternative Routes During Closure
During the temporary closure, travellers and cargo transporters were advised to use alternative ports of entry, including Nerston, Mahamba, Jeppes Reef, and the Lebombo Port of Entry with Mozambique. The BMA expressed gratitude to all affected stakeholders for their cooperation during this period.
Safety Concerns and Historical Context
This recent incident marks the second time within a two-month period that a truck accident has occurred at the Oshoek Border Post, sparking widespread concern over safety measures at this critical juncture. Stakeholders are calling for enhanced safety protocols to prevent future occurrences.
