Betway Premiership
By Sello Masilo
Orlando Pirates maintained their pursuit of Betway Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns with a 2-1 victory over Sekhukhune United at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday, 5 February 2025. Early goals in each half from Deon Hotto and Makhehlene Makhaula secured back-to-back wins for José Riveiro’s side, despite a late response from Linda Mntambo.
Match Overview
The Buccaneers entered the match aiming to build on their recent 1-0 triumph over arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby. Sekhukhune United, under the guidance of Lehlohonolo Seema, were seeking their first win in three matches following a 1-1 draw with Stellenbosch.
First Half
Pirates made an immediate impact, with Deon Hotto opening the scoring in the 5th minute from a direct free-kick after Patrick Maswanganyi was fouled just outside the box. This early advantage set the tone for the visitors.
The Buccaneers continued to press, with Relebohile Mofokeng testing goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangare in the 12th minute. Maswanganyi had a chance to double the lead in the 22nd minute but volleyed wide after a setup by Hotto. Sekhukhune’s Sipho Mbule attempted to level the score with a free-kick that sailed over the crossbar.
Keletso Makgalwa’s long-range effort in the 33rd minute was comfortably saved by Sipho Chaine, ensuring Pirates maintained their lead going into the break.
Second Half
Just two minutes into the second half, Pirates extended their lead. Makhehlene Makhaula capitalised on defensive lapses to convert Hotto’s cross, making it 2-0.
Maswanganyi missed an opportunity to further increase the lead in the 54th minute, dragging his shot wide from inside the area. Evidence Makgopa also came close in the 68th minute, but Sangare was equal to the task.
Sekhukhune found a lifeline in the 77th minute when substitute Linda Mntambo scored, reducing the deficit to 2-1. Despite late pressure, including two crucial saves by Chaine, Pirates held firm to secure the win.
Post-Match Reactions
Pirates’ head coach, José Riveiro, expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting their resilience and ability to capitalise on key moments. He noted the importance of maintaining momentum as they continue to chase the league leaders.
Lehlohonolo Seema acknowledged his team’s effort but lamented the early goals conceded, emphasising the need for improved concentration in future matches.
Standings and Implications
This victory keeps Orlando Pirates six points behind Mamelodi Sundowns, with a game in hand, reinforcing their position as strong title contenders. Sekhukhune United remains in fourth place, five points behind Polokwane City.
