Bahlabane Ba Ntwa got off to the perfect start when they took an early lead in the 12th minute courtesy of Siphelele Ntshangase's first competitive goal since 2015. The former Kaizer Chiefs playmaker's cross, which was meant for Sede Junior Dion, beat goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane at the far-post to hand Gallants 1-0 lead. Gallants pushed for the equalising goal after the restart with Katlego Otladisa's delightful cross finding Dion, whose effort was comfortably saved by Mpontshane from close range. Pirates were unwilling to sit back and invite pressure. Ntsako Makhubela forced keeper Washington Arubi into a fine save from close range on the hour-mark. The Bucs technical team introduced Fortune Makaringe, Terrence Dzvukamanja and Abel Mabaso, and the Buccaneers played on the counter in the closing stages of the game. This week, the Randburg Magistrate’s Court has sentenced convicted Orlando Pirates footballer Thembinkosi Lorch for assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Fundiswa Mathithibala.

On Tuesday, Lorch was ordered to pay a R100 000 fine to non-governmental organisation, People Opposing Women Abuse, with R50 000 payable immediately and balance in installments.

In June this year, Lorch was found guilty of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment on Tuesday, which was wholly suspended for five years on condition he is not found guilty of a similar offence during the same period.

Orlando Pirates confirmed they had charged Lorch with “serious misconduct” following an internal investigation. The club also fined him and ordered him to undergo anger management treatment.

Lorch was arrested on 07 September 2020, following an incident that happened at his place of residence in Midrand, on 06 September 2020.

Mathithibala said she was visiting Lorch when he left her at his home to go out with his friend. Mathithibala saw that it was getting late and messaged him to return her car keys.

On arrival, an argument ensued and Lorch became violent towards her and started to strangle her, beat her whilst pulling her up and down. She called for help and his friend came to her rescue.

In court, State prosecutor, Ms Michele Hart argued that the medical evidence corroborated the evidence of the complainant.

The accused did not have any injuries which meant that he was the aggressor. The accused and his witness did not create a good impression in court as they were found to be non-credible witnesses.

Meanwhile, the NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said the NPA will continue in its fight against Gender Based Violence to protect women from being subjected and/or targeted by perpetrators of GBV.

“The case relates to a complaint laid with the Midrand Police by his then-girlfriend in September 2020, that resulted in his arrest and subsequent release on bail of R2000,” said Mjonondwane.
