Orlando Pirates
Orlando Pirates showcased their championship pedigree by dismantling Royal AM with a dominant 4-0 win in a DStv Premiership match at Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Despite this significant triumph, the Pirates remain hot on the heels of the league leaders, now just three points behind Stellenbosch FC, with the race for the title heating up with only five matches to go.
Royal AM, feeling the weight of the loss, are standing 13th, with a nine-point cushion above the drop zone. Coach John Maduka’s squad, known affectionately as Thwihli Thwahla, is eager to bounce back against SuperSport United this coming Wednesday, aiming to climb further away from relegation worries.
The match was an exhilarating affair from the get-go. The Pirates — also known as the Buccaneers — were quick to draw first blood. A contentious moment gave Patrick Maswanganyi the chance to put his team ahead from the penalty spot at the 29-minute mark, following a foul on him by Sikhethelo Mabuza in the box. He made no mistake, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
Despite Royal AM’s attempts to equalise, including a free-kick rattling the crossbar right before half-time, the Pirates kept their lead heading into the break.
The second half saw the Soweto giants further their advantage. An exquisite pass from Maswanganyi sliced through the Royal AM defence, setting up Thalente Mbatha to double the lead. As the match progressed, newcomer Kabelo Dlamini shined, first assisting Relebohile Mofokeng for the third goal, then rounding off the scoring with a beautiful looped shot of his own.
This victory not only boosts the Pirates’ confidence but also tightens the league race. As the season nears its climax, the intensity in the Premiership is palpable, with every match potentially altering the fate of teams at both ends of the table.
Royal AM’s line-up saw several changes in attempts to shift the game’s momentum, but it was to no avail, as the Pirates’ controlled performance left little room for a comeback.
Next, the Pirates set their sights on Cape Town City — a crucial match-up that could further shape their title aspirations. On the other side, Royal AM’s upcoming fixture against SuperSport United now carries even more significance as they strive for a much-needed victory to steer clear of the relegation skirmish.
Today’s match was a testament to the Pirates’ resilience and determination. As the end of the season approaches, it’s all to play for in the DStv Premiership, with moments of magic, heartbreak, and triumph still to come.
Orlando Pirates (1) 4 (Maswanganyi 29′, Mbatha 56′, Mofokeng 74′, Dlamini 82′)
Royal AM (0) 0
