Orlando Pirates Coach Reveals Relebohile Mofokeng Missed Orbit College Clash Due to Injury Amid Transfer Speculation

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has revealed the reason why star forward Relebohile Mofokeng missed their Betway Premiership clash against Orbit College on Tuesday night. Without their star man, Pirates managed to get the job done and bag their second league win of the season. However, with speculation linking the 20-year-old with a move abroad, many began to wonder if the club were simply preparing for life without him.

Coach Ouaddou Addresses Mofokeng’s Surprise Absence

Now, it has come to light that Mofokeng actually missed the game as he was dealing with an injury. “About Rele, I have to discuss with the medical department, they communicated with me that he cannot be part of the game,” Ouaddou said after the game at Orlando Stadium. “But we still don’t have full feedback on the exam that he should do. I hope it’s nothing serious because we need him.”
The injury appears to have been picked up during Orlando Pirates’ recent MTN8 semi-final second leg triumph over Mamelodi Sundowns, where Mofokeng featured but may have sustained the issue.

This setback forced him out of the matchday squad entirely for the clash against newly promoted Orbit College on 26 August 2025. Despite the absence, Pirates secured a gritty 1-0 victory, with a workmanlike performance that saw them maintain a clean sheet and claim three points in the Betway Premiership. The win marked their second in the league this season, building early momentum under Ouaddou’s guidance.
Ouaddou’s comments came immediately after the game, clarifying that the medical team had advised against including Mofokeng, pending further assessments. The coach expressed hope that the injury is minor, emphasising the young winger’s importance to the team. Mofokeng, often called “Rele” by fans and teammates, has been a key player for the Buccaneers, contributing significantly with his pace, skill, and goal-scoring ability. Last season, he notched 27 goal contributions, making him a vital asset in both domestic and cup competitions.

Pirates’ Performance Without Their Star Forward

In Mofokeng’s absence, Orlando Pirates turned in a determined display to overcome Orbit College at Orlando Stadium. The match was not without its challenges, as the Sea Robbers had to grind out the result against a resilient opponent making their top-flight debut. A single goal proved enough, showcasing the team’s depth and ability to adapt. Players like Tshegofatso Mabasa and Evidence Makgopa stepped up in attack, while the defence held firm to secure the clean sheet.

This victory follows Pirates’ strong start to the campaign, including their progression in the MTN8, where they are set to face Stellenbosch FC in the final on 13 September 2025 at Mbombela Stadium. Ouaddou’s side has shown cup pedigree, reaching their fourth consecutive MTN8 final, and they are chasing a record fourth straight title in the competition. However, Mofokeng’s potential layoff raises concerns ahead of these crucial fixtures, as his creativity and flair have been central to their success.

Transfer Rumours Continue to Swirl Around Mofokeng

Mofokeng, though, continues to be linked with a transfer away from the club. Just last week, it was reported that Major League Soccer side Minnesota United had submitted an offer worth $2 million (around R35 million) for the forward. According to reports, the clubs were still in discussions to get the deal over the line. Should Mofokeng complete the move, he will link up with fellow South African Bongokuhle Hlongwane, who has been a popular figure at the club since 2022.

However, the MLS secondary transfer window closed on 21 August 2025, and despite Minnesota’s interest, the deal could not be finalised after Orlando Pirates increased their asking price. Sources indicated that Mofokeng had agreed personal terms in principle, but the clubs failed to reach an agreement before the deadline. This development leaves the door open for other suitors, as the young talent’s stock continues to rise.

Other clubs that have reportedly been keeping tabs on Mofokeng are Egypt’s Pyramids FC, Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven, as well as Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq, who recently signed Mohau Nkota. Al-Ettifaq had made an improved offer of €1.5 million (around R31 million), with reports suggesting a deal was imminent, but they later made a U-turn on their pursuit. PSV Eindhoven rumours of a R100 million bid were dismissed by Pirates as false. Additionally, there were whispers of interest from Celtic FC in Scotland, valuing him at £2 million, though discussions were in early stages and appear unsubstantiated.

Potential Impact of Rumours and Nkota’s Move

The constant transfer speculation has led some to question if it is affecting Mofokeng’s focus. Former player Junior Khanye suggested that the 20-year-old has been mentally impacted by his close friend Mohau Nkota’s recent move to Al-Ettifaq. Nkota, another Pirates youth product, completed his transfer to the Saudi Pro League, and Khanye believes this has weighed on Mofokeng, especially after a slow start to the season. “Whoever says what, it’s not easy for him to accept that [Nkota is overseas],” Khanye noted.
Pirates legend Edward Motale also weighed in, responding to concerns that the rumours might be distracting the young star. Coach Ouaddou, however, remains confident, stating he has not received any information about Mofokeng leaving and is focused on the player’s recovery. “For now, I’m confident since I haven’t received any information about him leaving.”

Mofokeng’s Rise and Importance to Pirates

Relebohile Mofokeng has been a standout performer for Orlando Pirates since breaking into the first team. The 20-year-old winger, who turns 21 in October, has impressed with his dribbling, vision, and ability to influence games from wide areas. He earned his first call-up to the South African national team, Bafana Bafana, and has become a fan favourite at the Soweto giants. His absence against Orbit College raised eyebrows, especially given the transfer buzz, but the injury explanation has eased some fears.
If the injury proves minor, Mofokeng could return for upcoming fixtures, including the MTN8 final.

A serious setback, however, might force Pirates to rely more on squad depth, with players like Monnapule Saleng and Evidence Makgopa filling the void. The club has started the Betway Premiership strongly, sitting near the top after early wins, and aims to challenge for the title while defending their MTN8 crown.
