In a pivotal midweek fixture of the Betway Premiership, Orlando Pirates secured a vital 1-0 victory over Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Wednesday evening. This win narrows the gap between the Buccaneers and the league leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns, intensifying the title race.

Orlando Pirates entered the match with determination, aiming to capitalise on any potential slip-ups by Sundowns. The Buccaneers dominated possession and created several scoring opportunities in the first half. Their persistence paid off in the 42nd minute when defender Nkosinathi Sibisi rose above the Chippa defence to head home a well-delivered corner, giving Pirates a deserved lead.
Chippa United struggled to find their rhythm, with their attacking efforts stifled by a well-organised Pirates defence. Despite making tactical changes in the second half, Chippa couldn’t break through, and the match concluded with Pirates securing all three points.
Impact on the Title Race
This victory is significant for Orlando Pirates as it reduces the point difference between them and Mamelodi Sundowns to 16 points. Notably, Pirates have four games in hand, presenting a realistic opportunity to further close the gap in the coming weeks.
Mamelodi Sundowns Held by Golden Arrows
In a concurrent fixture, Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 1-1 draw by Golden Arrows at the Mpumalanga Stadium. Golden Arrows took the lead through Keenan Phillips, but Sundowns equalised with a penalty converted by Lucas Ribeiro. Despite their efforts, Sundowns couldn’t secure a fifth consecutive league win, allowing Pirates to gain ground in the title chase.
Richards Bay’s Resurgence Continues
Elsewhere, Richards Bay extended their unbeaten run to six matches with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Sekhukhune United at the King Zwelithini Stadium. Chibuike Ohizu gave Sekhukhune the lead, but Richards Bay responded with goals from Fezile Gcaba and an injury-time winner by Thabiso Kutumela. This resurgence has propelled Richards Bay to 12th place, providing a four-point cushion above the relegation playoff spot.
