Orlando Pirates Announce Major Departures as 2023/24 Season Concludes
By Karabo Morifi
Orlando Pirates Football Club has announced on Friday, 7 May, that four key players—Richard Ofori, Siyabonga Mpontshane, Thabang Monare, and Kermit Erasmus—will be exiting the team when their contracts end on June 30. This follows the Bucs being crowned Nedbank Cup champions after a thrilling 2-1 victory against Mamelodi Sundowns at Mbombela Stadium on 31 May 2024.
“As the football season draws to a close, we not only mark the end of our campaign but also bid farewell to some of our esteemed players,” the Club stated in an emotional announcement.
Contributions Acknowledged
Reflecting on the impact of the departing players, the club expressed deep gratitude.
Richard Ofori
Richard Ofori, who joined the Buccaneers in 2020, quickly became a defensive stalwart. “Richard’s 58 matches and 29 clean sheets have been crucial to our successes. But more than that, he was a unifying force within the squad,” noted the Club. His presence both on and off the pitch has left lasting memories.
Siyabonga Mpontshane
The 38-year-old goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane ends a nine-season spell with the team. “Mpontshane’s exceptional discipline and dedication have made him one of our most respected and appreciated members,” the Club said.
Thabang Monare
Thabang Monare, fondly known as Desh, has been a paragon of hard work and resilience since his arrival. The 34-year-old midfielder played 93 matches, securing two Nedbank Cups, two MTN8 Cups, and a silver medal for the CAF Confederation Cup.
Kermit Erasmus
Kermit Erasmus rejoined the Bucs in 2022 and immediately contributed to winning the MTN8 title. “Romeo, with over 117 matches in Pirates colours, has solidified his legendary status at the club,” the Club said.
“We extend our heartfelt thanks to these players for their unwavering service and commitment to the Club. We wish them all the best in their future endeavours,” concluded the Club’s statement.
Changes in Coaching and Squad
In addition to the player departures, the Club also announced on 3 June that Assistant Coach Sergio Almenara will be leaving by mutual consent. “Mr. Almenara had initially submitted his request to leave earlier this year, but management chose to address this at the end of the season to ensure team focus,” explained the Club.
On the same day, the departure of striker Souaibou Marou was confirmed. “The Cameroonian player, who joined us at the beginning of the season, is free to join a club of his choice. We wish Souiabou all the best in his future endeavours,” said the Club.
Further, on 4 June, Fortune Makaringe’s exit was also announced. “Following four incredible seasons and over 140 matches, our journey with the 31-year-old midfielder has come to an end,” confirmed the Club.
