Orlando Pirates
In an intense second-leg semifinal clash, Orlando Pirates fell to a 1-0 defeat against Stellenbosch FC at the Orlando Stadium on Sunday afternoon. However, thanks to their vital away goal in the first leg, the Buccaneers secured their spot in the MTN8 final on the away goals rule, with a 2-2 aggregate score.
The game kicked off with Pirates taking control of possession and looking to settle into a rhythm. Stellenbosch, on the other hand, posed a threat on the counter-attack with moments of attacking brilliance.

Despite dominating possession, Pirates struggled to convert their chances, while Stellenbosch created notable scoring opportunities early in the game. It was in the 22nd minute that Stellenbosch opened the scoring through a Zakhele Lepasa own goal, taking advantage of a corner situation. The strike took a deflection off Lepasa, leaving the goalkeeper dumbfounded.
As the first half drew to a close, Deon Hotto came close to equalizing for Pirates with a curling free-kick, but Stellenbosch held onto their 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The second half saw Stellenbosch gain control of the ball initially, but they failed to pose a major threat going forward. In contrast, Pirates looked dangerous when attacking, with Hotto and Paseka Mako linking up well in the Stellenbosch half. However, their lack of finishing let them down.
Despite their attacking efforts, Pirates struggled to find the back of the net, and Stellenbosch relied on hitting them on the break. In the 89th minute, Pirates’ substitute Evidence Makgopa came close to leveling the scoreline, but his shot was saved by Stellenbosch’s goalkeeper, Sage Stephens.
Ultimately, despite the 1-0 defeat on the day, Orlando Pirates secured their spot in the MTN8 final with two away goals, resulting in a 2-2 final aggregate score.
