On 27 October 2024, the African National Congress (ANC) is commemorating the life and legacy of Oliver Reginald Tambo, one of South Africa’s most iconic freedom fighters and anti-apartheid leaders, at a wreath-laying ceremony held at Tamboville Cemetery in Benoni. Known for his dedication to unity, integrity, and justice, Tambo’s influence remains a cornerstone of the ANC’s values. However, as the ANC faces challenges today, many wonder how he would perceive the party’s current direction, especially in the face of declining public support, a recent coalition with the Democratic Alliance (DA), and the challenges of rebuilding public trust amid past corruption scandals.

In commemorating Tambo, the ANC leadership, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, emphasised the importance of drawing on Tambo’s legacy as a model of leadership. Tambo’s values are viewed as essential to the ANC’s ongoing efforts to renew itself and to address socio-economic issues. Ramaphosa called for the ANC to continue prioritising the unity and service to the people that Tambo championed, suggesting that a return to Tambo’s principles could help the party navigate its current challenges, which include poverty, inequality, and unemployment .

Despite the emphasis on Tambo’s teachings, the ANC’s recent coalition with the DA has stirred controversy, with critics arguing that this partnership contradicts the party’s historical stance and ideals. Some ANC supporters feel that this alliance, though strategic, may have compromised the ANC’s revolutionary character and would be something that Tambo himself might have questioned given his staunch opposition to partnerships that could dilute the party’s principles. The ANC’s alignment with the DA in a government of national unity (GNU) was driven by the need for stability, yet the partnership has faced criticism for failing to fully address the ANC’s base concerns .

Tambo’s legacy of unity and coalition-building was vital in his time, and he was renowned for his ability to create alliances across international lines, rallying global support for South Africa’s liberation. However, his approach emphasised alliances built on shared values and long-term goals, a principle that is now being invoked in debates about the ANC’s current coalition choices. ANC officials at the commemoration highlighted the need for “renewal,” a concept deeply connected to Tambo’s vision, hoping it will reinvigorate the party’s alignment with the ideals of freedom, justice, and service .

As South Africa reflects on Tambo’s enduring legacy, the ANC faces the pressing task of balancing his values with the realities of the modern political landscape. The ANC’s celebration of Tambo’s life underscores its commitment to retaining the ideals that have shaped South Africa, even as the party grapples with questions about its future direction in a changing political environment.
