A NATION LET DOWN
By Eddy Mukadi
Eddy Mukadi – The decision to bury former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu in South Africa is one that has left many heartbroken, disappointed, and deeply concerned.
President Lungu was not just a political figure; he was a symbol of Zambia’s journey, the struggles and growth. He may not have been the best president in history, but he served the country for seven years and left a legacy that can not be wiped out. To see his final resting place be outside the borders of the very land he once led is, to me a disservice to his legacy and to the people of Zambia.
What pains the most is that this could have been a moment for national healing. A state funeral on Zambian soil would have been an opportunity to bring people together, regardless of their political affiliations. Zambia needed it. Instead, that chance has been taken from the people. Instead of unity, they are left with confusion, resentment, and unanswered questions.
This decision hurts not only Lungu’s supporters, but every Zambian who believes in dignity, honor, and national pride. Whether one agreed with his policies or not, Edgar Lungu served as the President of the Republic of Zambia. He carried the hopes of millions. His life, and especially his death, should be treated with the respect that role demands.
It’s not just about liking or disliking one man. This is about doing right by the people who trusted him, followed him, and still love him. He belongs to Zambia. He deserves to be buried in the country he served. And the people deserved the chance to say goodbye on Zambian soil.
Edgar Lungu does not deserve a private send-off, he deserves to be honored. Even if you don’t like one person, do it for the people of Zambia and his loyal followers.
Until then, there will always be a void an ache that something important was taken from the people, especially those who were so loyal to him.
Zambia deserves better.
