Operation Vala Umgodi
By Mpho Moloi
In a decisive move against illegal mining and associated activities, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, under the banner of Operation Vala Umgodi, arrested nine undocumented foreign nationals in Ermelo on 8 May 2025. The suspects, aged between 25 and 47, were apprehended during coordinated operations on two separate streets within the town.
Coordinated Efforts Lead to Arrests
Captain Mpho Nonyane, spokesperson for SAPS Mpumalanga, confirmed the arrests, stating that the operation was a collaborative effort involving multiple departments. “The team deployed under Operation Vala Umgodi in Mpumalanga arrested nine suspects yesterday, on 08 May 2025, in two different streets at Ermelo. The arrested suspects, aged between 25 and 47, were found to be undocumented foreign nationals,” she said.
The operation saw the involvement of proactive units from SAPS, the Department of Health, the Department of Labour, and the Department of Home Affairs. This multidisciplinary approach underscores the government’s commitment to addressing illegal mining and its associated challenges comprehensively.
Legal Proceedings Underway
The nine suspects appeared before the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on charges related to contraventions of the Immigration Act of South Africa. They have been remanded in custody and are scheduled to reappear in court on Monday, 12 May 2025.
Official Statements and Community Impact
Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, welcomed the arrests and emphasized the ongoing efforts to eradicate illegal mining activities. “Law enforcement agencies will continue with efforts to eradicate illegal mining activities. The public can rest assured that more achievements are expected as the operation continues,” he stated.
The arrests have been met with a mix of relief and concern within the Ermelo community. Local residents have expressed hope that such operations will lead to a reduction in illegal activities and an improvement in public safety. However, there is also apprehension about the potential for retaliatory actions and the need for sustained law enforcement presence.
Broader Context: Operation Vala Umgodi’s National Impact
Operation Vala Umgodi, launched in December 2023, is a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal mining and related crimes. The operation has led to the arrest of over 20,000 suspects across various provinces, including Gauteng, Limpopo, and the Northern Cape. In March 2025 alone, more than 1,700 individuals were apprehended for offenses ranging from illegal mining to possession of unlicensed firearms and explosives.
The operation has also resulted in the seizure of significant quantities of illegal mining equipment, unlicensed firearms, and stolen property. These efforts have disrupted numerous illegal mining operations and have been instrumental in restoring law and order in affected communities.
