Operation Shanela

In the ongoing multi-disciplinary trawl against crime in South Africa, the Northern Cape police have held 216 suspects in the ambit of Operation Shanela.

The arrests were in connection with critical crimes, including illegal possession of explosives, illicit mining, murder, rape, unlawful alcohol and drug dealing, immigration crimes, assaults, intentional property damage, and impaired driving.

Pollice Spokesperson, Sergeant Molefi Shemane, indicated that the high density Operation Shanela ramps up as New Year’s Eve approaches, tightening the noose around crime across all districts of the province, especially in high-crime areas.

Shemane explained, “The focused high-density operations launched on Thursday, December 28, 2023, and ran till Sunday, December 31. These operations encompassed vehicle control points, stop and search activities, roadblocks, tracing of wanted suspects, on-foot and vehicular patrols, regulatory inspections, and proactive visits to farms and mines.”

Further detail from the spokesperson revealed, “Detectives arrested 182 wanted suspects, charged 11 individuals for business robberies, 18 for murders, 14 for rape, 133 for assault with intent to inflict serious bodily harm, and 4 for illegal possession of firearms. We executed 44 Vehicle Control Points and 12 roadblocks all over the province, besides inspecting 76 various properties. A total of 2922 vehicles and 6119 individuals were screened.”

Enforcement was also extended to second-hand dealers, liquor premises, mines, farms, and both formal and informal businesses, where the police confiscated firearms, mobile phones, dangerous weapons, vast quantities of alcohol, drugs including mandrax, tik, dagga, explosives, and cash suspected to be crime proceeds.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lt Gen Koliswa Otola, pledged that these stringent operations would persist during the New Year festivities. She emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards alcohol abuse and crimes involving women and children.
