Operation Shanela
The South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Operation Shanela has proven to be a resounding success, leading to the arrest of 1614 suspects involved in serious, violent, and other criminal activities.
Running from August 21 to August 27, 2023, this intelligence-driven operation aimed to disrupt criminal activities before and during the weekend, which are known to threaten the safety of communities within the province.
The arrests made during this operation were diverse and impactful. Notably, 38 wanted suspects were apprehended, providing relief for authorities and communities alike. Additionally, 12 arrests were made for murder and 20 for attempted murder, ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice.
The focus on property-related crime proved effective, with 86 arrests made for burglaries and thefts. Furthermore, law enforcement successfully apprehended 195 individuals involved in assaults with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, enhancing the safety of South African citizens.
A total of 290 arrests were made for common assaults, demonstrating SAPS’s commitment to maintaining peace and order in the communities. The remaining 314 arrests were made in connection with a range of other crimes, indicating the comprehensive nature of Operation Shanela.
In addition to the significant number of arrests, the operation resulted in noteworthy seizures. Law enforcement confiscated 33 firearms and an astonishing 746 rounds of ammunition of different calibers, effectively curbing the potential for further violence. Police also seized 321 dagga and 11,099 mandrax tablets, addressing the ongoing issue of drug trafficking. Furthermore, 1,355 liters of liquor were confiscated, ensuring that those in possession were in compliance with the law. The seizure of 29.8kg of copper cable suggests a concerted effort to combat theft and protect infrastructure.
Throughout the operation, various units worked collaboratively to achieve success. This included Vispol, Detectives, Crime Intelligence, AGU, POP, Law Enforcement, specialized units, K9 teams, private security companies, and neighborhood watch structures. Each unit played a vital role in executing the operation effectively and thoroughly.
Operation Shanela also prioritized addressing illegal liquor outlets and suspected drug outlets. Compliance inspections were conducted at licensed liquor outlets, emphasizing the need for responsible alcohol distribution.
All arrested suspects are expected to face charges and make court appearances in different courts. This signifies the commitment of law enforcement to ensure that justice is served and that communities can feel safe and protected.
