Operation Shanela

Operation Shanela

Operation Shanela has apprehended 904 individuals in the North West province for a myriad of offences. This extensive operation, which saw the collaboration of various law enforcement units under the South African Police Service (SAPS), has made commendable headway in addressing crime across all districts within the province.

The arrested suspects find themselves facing charges spanning murder, attempted murder, assault with the intention to inflict grave bodily harm, drug dealing, malicious damage to property, and operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. These operations underscore the SAPS’s unyielding commitment to upholding peace and security across communities.

A significant portion of these arrests, totalling 374 suspects, were made during targeted raiding operations. Operation Shanela showcases a comprehensive approach to crime prevention, employing tactics such as regular stop and searches, roadblocks, vehicle check points, and high visibility patrols — including on foot. Additionally, it emphasises the tracing of individuals wanted for especially heinous crimes such as murder and rape. The operation also involves compliance inspections at premises licensed to sell liquor and at dealers of second-hand goods.

In a move aimed at tightening the grip on illegal immigration, 43 suspected undocumented foreign nationals were detained and handed over to Immigration Officials for further processing.

The scope of this operation extended beyond arrests. Police officers conducted searches at 95 premises and undertook the extensive task of searching 2,622 individuals along with 1,477 vehicles. This comprehensive search operation resulted in the confiscation of seven firearms, 37 rounds of ammunition, 11 cellular phones, alongside a variety of illegal drugs and tobacco products, highlighting the broad spectrum of criminal activities being targeted.

Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the Provincial Commissioner, has expressed his gratitude towards all the law enforcement agencies and partners involved in the operation. His acknowledgment of their undeterred resolve and continuous efforts underscores the collective commitment to combating criminality within the province.
