Operation Shanela
Law enforcement agencies in Gauteng, South Africa, have achieved significant success in curbing crime in local communities. Over the weekend, more than 300 suspects were arrested through the joint efforts of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD), Gauteng Traffic, the Community Policing Forum, the Department of Home Affairs, and other law enforcement agencies.
During the integrated Operation Shanela on Saturday, two suspects were apprehended in Moleleki Extension 2 for the possession of three unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Law enforcement officers, while executing their duties, noticed a man hiding something in one of the cars at a local car wash. Upon approaching the vehicle, two AK47 rifles, a pistol, and ammunition were discovered. This arrest showcases the dedication and vigilance of the police force.
Detectives working on Shanela operations on Saturday played a significant role in the arrest of 277 suspects in Gauteng. Of these arrests, 129 were for contact crimes, 21 for contact-related crimes, five for property crimes, two for tampering with essential infrastructure, five for crimes requiring police action, and 34 for gender-based violence. Major General Anna Sithole, the Ekurhuleni District Commissioner, expressed her appreciation for the teams’ relentless efforts in reducing crime.
In another successful operation in KwaDukuza, KwaZulu-Natal, 62 suspects were apprehended on Friday. Various disciplines within the KwaZulu-Natal police force collaborated with multiple stakeholders to cleanse the streets of criminal activities. These suspects were arrested for crimes such as possession of drugs, dangerous weapons, illicit cigarettes, illegal medicines, and counterfeit goods. Additionally, 36 illegal immigrants were detained for violating the Immigration Act.
The diligent efforts of the police resulted in the seizure of 60 heroine capsules, as well as dagga and counterfeit goods with an estimated street value of R140,000. Several scrapyards were also inspected, leading to the confiscation of scaffolding equipment and a bakkie.
All arrested suspects will face legal proceedings at the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
