Open Letter to Free State MEC Limakatso Mahasa

This is an open letter to MEC Limakatso Mahasa, the Sports, Arts, and Culture MEC of the Free State Provincial Government from Tebogo Kotsi

Dear MEC Mahasa,

I hope this letter finds you well. I want to clarify that I am not fighting or complaining, but rather raising a serious concern and proposing a possible solution. Please read this letter with an open mind and an open heart.

As of today, July 26, 2023, the Macufe bid has not been released yet. My fear is that we might face the same drama as last year. This situation is detrimental to the growth of our province and the arts sector. The negative attitude surrounding Macufe has already caused us to lose over R100 million in investments from visitors, corporate budgets, and other sources of income. Many big liquor companies have chosen to invest in Gauteng-based companies for events, rather than investing in our province during the festival. We have seen instances where big clubs from Johannesburg have taken over our local market and left with the profits. I will not delve into the other details of the drama.

C-SQUARED MACUFE

Solution:
To avoid this drama, I propose the following solution. The department should invite promoters and outlets to come up with a program for the Macufe period, and then the department can partner with those events. We have seen what outlets and promoters did when there was no Macufe in 2021, which was also acknowledged during your budget speech in 2022. I believe this model can be successful with the assistance of a consulting company to manage the process. I can confidently say that many individuals are ready for Macufe week. We cannot afford to lose market share to events like DSTV Food fest, Afropunk, Burner Boy, and others. Macufe needs a serious revamp, and it is in your hands to make it happen.

My esteemed MEC, we need to create a legacy for the next generation. We must generate employment and open up markets. Sitting here and complaining will not solve anything. If we work together, we can achieve great things. You have Mochini Michael by your side to offer advice. I believe he will see the potential in this model, unless there are other factors at play.

As I mentioned earlier, I am not fighting. I am simply asking if we can work together harmoniously to build a legacy. I understand that there may be personal issues, but now is not the time for them. Let’s unite and focus on the task at hand. You pledged to serve the people with honor and dignity, so let us fulfill that promise.

MEC, can we have a drama-free Macufe in 2023? Ntate Mochini, when you organize district festivals, please remember the other artists out there. Many people complain that you act as a gatekeeper. I hope and pray that these complaints are unfounded, as it would be wrong and detrimental to our fellow artists who are already struggling. I kindly request that you prove me wrong.

MEC Mahasa, as I mentioned before, I am not fighting. I am writing to you as a concerned member of the Free State Province. I understand that you have a policy that prevents you from responding on Facebook, but I hope you consider what I am saying.

I would appreciate a prompt response to this letter, and I would also like to request a meeting with you and your team to discuss my proposed solution in more detail.

Yours sincerely,
Tebogo Kotsi
