One Suspect Arrested for Disebo Portia Mosupa’s Murder in Welkom

Welkom, 19 July 2024 – The Free State Police have confirmed that Disebo Portia Mosupa, the Acting Youth Development Officer at Matjhabeng Local Municipality, who was reported missing on 15 July 2024, has been found buried at Thabo Cemetery in Welkom. The grim discovery has led to the arrest of a suspect in connection with her murder.

Captain Stephen Thakeng, spokesperson for the Free State Police, revealed that Mosupa’s body was found following an intensive search operation. “Upon receiving information about Disebo’s disappearance, a team comprising police investigators, community members, and family members embarked on a thorough search, which led to a body being found at Thabong Cemeteries. The body, which was buried in a used grave, was exhumed this morning by forensic investigators,” Thakeng said.

Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

A 37-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of Disebo Portia Mosupa. The investigation is ongoing, and the police are urging anyone with information that could lead to further arrests to come forward. “Anyone with information that can lead to more arrests can contact Detective Sergeant Zuzeka Kobuwe of Welkom Detective Services at 078 683 9201 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111. Alternatively, an anonymous tip can be sent via the MySAPS App,” Thakeng added.

Background of the Case

Disebo Mosupa, 30, was reported missing by her father on 15 July 2024. He had visited her residence on 14 July 2024 and found all the doors locked. The following day, he returned to discover the doors open and the house ransacked, with no sign of Mosupa. This prompted the family to report her missing at the Welkom Police Station.

The news of Mosupa’s murder has sent shockwaves through the Welkom community. Free State Social Development MEC Mathabo Leeto has condemned the brutal killing, expressing deep condolences to the family. “We condemn this brutal act and extend our heartfelt condolences to Disebo’s family and friends during this difficult time,” Leeto said.
