Johannesburg Water
Johannesburg – Johannesburg Water has issued a crucial reminder for all customers to prepare adequately for the upcoming one-month planned maintenance by Rand Water. This significant maintenance period, scheduled from 22 June to 29 July 2024, aims to improve the reliability and efficiency of the city’s water infrastructure.
Rand Water’s extensive maintenance works will affect Johannesburg Water’s systems, specifically those supplied by the Palmiet and Eikenhof pump stations and the Daleside Booster Station. The affected areas include key Johannesburg suburbs and surrounding municipalities like Sandton, Midrand, South Hills, Alexandra Park, Randjieslaagte, and Linksfield.
Impact on Water Supply
“This kind of preventative maintenance is imperative to make Rand Water’s systems more efficient and reliable for their customers, such as Johannesburg Water. During this time, Johannesburg Water customers will be impacted by low pressure to no water supply,” stated Johannesburg Water.
Johannesburg Water is putting measures in place to mitigate the impact of the maintenance on critical infrastructure. Alternate water supply will be made available at strategic locations, including hospitals, clinics, schools, municipal offices, police stations, and shopping centres. However, residents are still strongly encouraged to build their own water reserves ahead of the scheduled works.
Altered Pumping Schedule
The pumping capacity at Rand Water’s Palmiet Pumpstation, a vital cog in powering Johannesburg’s water systems, will be significantly reduced during the maintenance period:
- 1 July 2024, Palmiet System: Pumping will operate at 60% capacity for eight hours.
- 15 July 2024, Palmiet System: Pumping will reduce to 68% capacity for 50 hours.
- 29 July 2024, Palmiet System: Pumping will reduce to 76% capacity for 40 hours.
Each phase of the maintenance has been carefully scheduled to minimise the disruption as much as possible, but Johannesburg Water has highlighted that some inconvenience is unavoidable.
Steps for Residents
Johannesburg Water requests residents take the following actions to ensure they are prepared:
- Store Water: Fill up containers with clean water sufficient for at least a few days’ use.
- Reduce Water Usage: Minimise non-essential water usage before and during the maintenance period.
- Stay Informed: Keep abreast of updates from Johannesburg Water’s official channels.
Final Note
Rand Water and Johannesburg Water assure the public that this extensive maintenance is a proactive measure designed to sustain long-term water supply reliability and efficiency. Their cooperation and understanding during this critical period are greatly appreciated.
