Tshepo Khoza, the Deputy Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature, has resigned following serious allegations that he forged his matric certificate. His resignation comes less than three months after his appointment, raising significant concerns about integrity and accountability within political offices.

Khoza, who previously served as a Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Safety in the City of Matlosana Local Municipality, submitted his resignation earlier this week. The resignation letter, addressed to the Speaker of the Legislature, Desbo Mohono, provided limited details about his reasons for stepping down. However, Khoza mentioned that he was asked to resign by the African National Congress (ANC), which has since come under scrutiny for its vetting processes.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the North West have been vocal in their demands for a thorough investigation into the allegations against Khoza. The party has called for transparency and accountability, urging the ANC to take decisive action to ensure that public office bearers meet the necessary qualifications. According to the EFF, the allegations surrounding Khoza’s matric certificate could have far-reaching implications, not only for his political career but also for the public’s trust in the political system.

COSATU, the Congress of South African Trade Unions, has also weighed in on the issue, expressing shock and disappointment over the situation. COSATU has welcomed Khoza’s removal as Deputy Speaker but argues that this action alone is insufficient. The trade union federation has called on the ANC to remove Khoza from all positions of deployment and to consider pursuing criminal charges if the allegations are proven true. COSATU’s Provincial Secretary, Kopano Konopi, emphasized the need for rigorous vetting of all ANC deployees to avoid similar situations in the future.

Khoza’s resignation has sparked significant debate on social media platforms, particularly on X (formerly Twitter). Users have expressed a range of opinions, with some supporting the call for an investigation, while others question the timing and motivations behind the allegations. One user wrote, “If the ANC knew about these allegations, why did they allow Khoza to hold such a high position in the first place?” Another user commented, “This scandal just shows the rot within our political system. We need leaders who are honest and transparent.”

The ANC in the North West has remained relatively silent on the matter, refusing to confirm whether Khoza will also resign as a Member of the Legislature. This has led to further speculation and criticism, with many questioning the party’s commitment to addressing the issue transparently. Sources within the party suggest that the ANC is conducting its internal investigations before making any public statements.
