NUM and AMCU conflicts | Over 500 miners held hostage underground

By Thys Khiba

Members of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) have allegedly held “hostage” 543 mineworkers of Gold One’s Modder East mine in Springs.

The ongoing conflict is related to union representation, with miners who have been signed up to NUM by default, seeking representation from the AMCU.

The affected mine has succeeded in interdicting a strike of the AMCU and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on Monday.

The Labour Court interdict prohibits the detention of Gold One employees underground, prohibits striking workers from preventing non-striking workers from entering or leaving the company’s premises, and prohibits protestors from damaging Gold One’s property.

The NUM claimed that nine of its members had been injured when they were “assaulted by the hooligans who were preventing them from coming to the surface.”

The AMCU members dismissed the allegations and said the workers had remained underground as part of a protest.

A family member who want to remain anonymous indicated that his cousin is affected and is still underground without water and food.

This is a developing story.
