Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni announced in a recent media briefing that the South African government is taking significant steps to combat illegal mining and corruption in the country.

The deployment of 3,300 members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) signifies the government’s commitment to resolving these issues and fostering inclusive economic growth.

Addressing the media after a cabinet meeting, Minister Ntshavheni stated that the deployment of SANDF personnel will be active from October 28, 2023, to April 28, 2024. Their role will be to assist the South African Police Service and other law enforcement agencies in dealing with the pressing issue of illegal mining. The Minister emphasized that this deployment demonstrates the government’s seriousness in eradicating illegal mining and creating conditions for economic transformation.

Minister Ntshavheni also highlighted the efforts of the Justice, Crime Prevention, and Security (JCPS) cluster in their fight against crime and corruption. Police Minister Bheki Cele has already provided the nation with an update on quarterly crime statistics, demonstrating progress in tackling crime.

Moreover, the government welcomed the successful hosting of the National Anti-Corruption Advisory Council’s (NACAC) National Dialogue. This dialogue focused on implementing the National Anti-Corruption Strategy and the recommendations of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture.

Significant strides have been made in implementing reforms suggested by the State Capture Commission. Currently, eight out of sixteen recommended legislative reforms are before Parliament. These proposed amendments cover critical areas such as public procurement, administrative reform, conduct of public servants, reform of intelligence services, money laundering, and electoral reform.

In the fight against corruption, the Asset Forfeiture Unit has been instrumental in freezing ill-gotten gains worth R14 billion, while managing to recoup R5.4 billion. Additionally, the Investigating Directorate has taken 34 state capture and corruption cases to court, involving 205 accused individuals.
