Government urges institutions and students to ensure timely submission of registration data and appeals

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has officially confirmed that allowance payments for the 2025 academic year have been finalised and are ready for disbursement. This follows extensive consultations with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the Post School Education and Training (PSET) sector.

The scheme has outlined allowance caps for university students, catered and non-catered residences, as well as support for students with disabilities and those in distance learning programmes.

Additional Support for Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities will receive extra financial assistance to support their academic journey, including:

• Assistive Devices: R54,080

Institutional Compliance with NSFAS Allowance Caps

NSFAS has cautioned institutions that if they wish to deviate from the allowance caps, they must obtain written approval from NSFAS before submitting any requests for higher allowances. The scheme emphasised that strict compliance is essential to ensure equitable distribution of funds.

Upfront Payment to Universities

NSFAS has released the second upfront payment to universities during the week of 3 March 2025, ensuring that institutions were able to disburse March allowances by 7 March 2025.

This initiative is intended to streamline payments and prevent delays in student allowances, which have been a recurring issue in previous years.

NSFAS Payments for TVET Colleges

NSFAS has also finalised allowance payments for students enrolled in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. The allowance breakdown for TVET students includes:

• Catered Residences (Metro Areas): R65,993
• Non-Catered Residences (Metro Areas): R56,633
• Catered Students with Disabilities (Metro Areas): R69,633
• Non-Catered Residences (Non-Metro Areas): R42,640

To ensure efficient disbursement, NSFAS released initial payments on 7 March 2025 to TVET colleges that had submitted valid student registration data. At the start of business on 4 March 2025, a total of 18 TVET colleges had uploaded their student registration records.

NSFAS will continue to monitor the submission of registrations from TVET institutions and has scheduled a second payment round for Friday, 14 March 2025.

The registration upload cut-off date for the second payment round was Monday, 10 March 2025. NSFAS stated that students whose valid registration data was submitted before this cut-off date will receive their allowances within March 2025.

Urgent Call for Students to Submit Appeal Documents

Students who have lodged funding appeals for the 2025 academic year have been urged to submit all required documents immediately.

According to NSFAS policy, students must submit an appeal within 30 days of receiving their application results. The submission of appeal documents is essential for NSFAS to finalise funding decisions without delays.

NSFAS Encourages Timely Registration Data Submission

Following the confirmation of 2025 allowance caps, NSFAS has confirmed that its portal is fully operational and ready to receive valid registration data.

NSFAS has strongly encouraged institutions to submit their registration data promptly to avoid unnecessary delays in allowance payments.

Students are advised to check with their respective institutions to ensure that their registration information has been processed and submitted on time.
