NSFAS
Pretoria, South Africa – The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has once again urged students attending Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges to promptly submit their banking details, ensuring they receive their NSFAS allowances without delay.
During a media briefing held in Pretoria on Monday, NSFAS Administrator, Freeman Nomvalo, provided updates on the scheme’s ongoing efforts to disburse student allowances, address student accommodation challenges, and implement related administrative reforms.
Streamlined Allowance Payments
Nomvalo confirmed that the scheme has established a new payment mechanism specifically tailored for TVET students. Payments are now being made directly into the students’ bank accounts, following an announcement made on 26 April 2024.
“We have successfully verified a total of 211,591 students’ bank accounts. However, 7,160 accounts failed verification checks for various reasons, such as the bank accounts not belonging to the students themselves but to their parents,” Nomvalo elaborated.
He stressed the importance of students providing their own banking details for verification purposes. This measure aims to mitigate potential risks and ensure alignment with the students’ records within the scheme.
“We urge all TVET students without bank accounts to open accounts at their preferred banks to avoid delays. Students who have already submitted their details but received failure notifications via the myNSFAS portal should re-submit their correct banking details on the portal,” advised Nomvalo.
Current Delays in University Allowances
In addressing the university students, Nomvalo acknowledged the existing challenges they face. At present, university students will continue to receive allowances through their respective institutions as previously arranged.
Tackling Student Accommodation Issues
Nomvalo also spoke on pressing accommodation issues, particularly the pending payments to private student accommodation landlords. He confirmed that NSFAS has established a dedicated email and enhanced their capacity to address all disputes or concerns from landlords concerning outstanding payments.
“I call on all landlords to submit their concerns related to outstanding payments to the dedicated email address, NSFASAccomProv@nsfas.org.za. The initial submission deadline was 10 May 2024, but we have extended it to 31 May 2024,” Nomvalo announced.
He assured that all queries received would be processed, with payments expected by the end of May 2024. Any remaining invoices will be managed through June.
Planning for Future Accommodation
In a forward-looking move, NSFAS is preparing for a national conference scheduled for September 2024. This event will focus on future student accommodation and will involve various stakeholders, including both private and public accommodation providers.
“A Task Team, comprising student accommodation stakeholders, has been set up to serve as a consultative forum. This team will report during the September conference. Our aim is to regularise private student accommodation and enhance overall accommodation standards,” Nomvalo affirmed.
Strengthening NSFAS Administration
Nomvalo also revealed plans to procure additional capacity by month-end to fortify the Office of the Administrator. This will address long-standing issues, such as the timely submission of financial statements and the Close Out Report.
Your Role as a Student or Landlord
Students: Ensure your banking details are correct and match your NSFAS records to avoid payment delays.
Landlords: Submit any payment-related concerns to NSFASAccomProv@nsfas.org.za by 31 May 2024 for timely resolution.
By taking these steps, NSFAS aims to streamline administrative processes and improve service delivery for all stakeholders involved. For more information, visit the official NSFAS website.
