Ernest Khosa, the chairperson of the NSFAS board, has decided to take a leave of absence following allegations of corruption levelled against him by the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) in a leaked audio recording.

Outa has called for Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande and Khosa to resign, and if they do not, they have asked President Cyril Ramaphosa to fire them.

Voice recordings of Khosa meeting a service provider representative, released by Outa, revealed allegations that service providers paid millions of rands to Khosa and Nzimande in kickbacks for tenders. The recordings further suggest that almost R1 million was paid to the South African Communist Party (SACP), chaired by Nzimande.

Furthermore, the recordings suggest that the payments were made in return for tenders and “protection” for service providers.

Following the allegations, the NSFAS board issued a statement announcing Khosa’s decision to take a leave of absence. They emphasized that it should not be seen as an admission of guilt, but rather a responsible move to promote good corporate governance, transparency, and accountability. The board has also appointed an independent legal firm to investigate the allegations against Khosa and will report back within 30 days.

Meanwhile, Minister Nzimande has strongly refuted the allegations, claiming that he has never received personal kickbacks from service providers to NSFAS or any other entities under his department. He labeled the OUTA report as baseless and part of a malicious campaign against
