The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has kicked off its 2025 funding application cycle with a remarkable start, receiving over 235,000 applications within the first week. The funding scheme opened its applications on 20 September 2024, providing both prospective and current students at public institutions of higher learning the opportunity to secure financial assistance for their 2025 academic year. This surge in early applications highlights the importance of NSFAS in supporting South African students in need of financial aid.
According to the latest data provided by NSFAS, a total of 235,780 applications have been received. Among these, 202,044 applicants who are beneficiaries of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) have already been provisionally approved for funding. The remaining 60,021 applications are still awaiting evaluation, while 3,660 applications have been withdrawn, and 1,862 were unsuccessful.
Breakdown of Applications by Province
NSFAS has shared a detailed breakdown of the applications received from each province, showcasing the strong demand for financial aid across South Africa. The majority of applications came from KwaZulu-Natal, which accounted for 109,026 of the total submissions. Gauteng followed with 31,491 applications, and Limpopo recorded 21,234. Other notable numbers include:
• North-West: 6,098 applications
• Mpumalanga: 10,704 applications
• Western Cape: 6,051 applications
• Northern Cape: 849 applications
• Eastern Cape: 13,478 applications
• Free State: 6,314 applications
This distribution emphasizes the wide reach of NSFAS, as students from all regions of South Africa seek financial support to further their education.
NSFAS Calls for Prompt Applications
NSFAS has urged all prospective applicants, particularly those currently in Grade 9, 10, 11, and 12, not to wait until their final results or the closing date to submit their applications. The application process, as described by NSFAS, is designed to be seamless and user-friendly. Students can create their profiles on the myNSFAS portal, complete the necessary information, upload the required documents, and submit their applications well before the deadline of 15 December 2024.
For non-SASSA beneficiaries, the completion of an NSFAS consent form is mandatory, and NSFAS continues to highlight the importance of providing accurate and complete information to avoid delays in the evaluation process.
