The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has announced the reinstatement of its Aspirant Prosecutor Programme, which was suspended earlier this year due to government-wide budget cuts and fiscal constraints. Acting Deputy Director General: Corporate Services, Ms Bulelwa Makeke, made the announcement, highlighting the importance of this programme for the future of South Africa’s legal system.
In the 2022/23 financial year, the NPA successfully absorbed over 1,000 law graduates into its Aspirant Prosecutor Programme. However, the sudden budget cuts left many of these aspirants without contracts upon completing the programme, causing a significant setback in the organisation’s efforts to address staffing needs. According to Makeke, the recent improvement in the NPA’s budget situation has now made it possible to offer contracts to many aspirants who are already within the system, allowing the NPA to gradually fill vacant district court positions created through internal promotions.
“For 2024, the NPA is starting the process to recruit a smaller intake of 80 aspirants for the year, but with a specific focus on NPA offices that have the capacity to train these colleagues and utilise them in priority high-need areas,” Makeke said, underscoring the strategic approach to this year’s intake.
The NPA is committed to ensuring that the recruitment process aligns with the organisation’s operational needs and the capacity of its offices to provide adequate training. This smaller intake aims to target high-need areas where the demand for prosecutorial services is most critical.
Makeke also announced that the advertisement for the 2025 intake will be published on 16 August 2024 on both the NPA and Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) websites, as well as on the NPA’s social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter. The training for the new intake is scheduled to begin on 1 March 2025.
