BREAKING NEWS| Speaker of the National Assembly, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, announced her immediate resignation on Wednesday amidst an ongoing corruption investigation and the possibility of arrest. This decision comes in the wake of the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria dismissing her application to prevent her arrest, highlighting the urgency of the situatio

Mapisa-Nqakula, who has been accused of demanding R2.3 million in illicit payments from defence contractors – a revelation made by the Sunday Times – has consistently declared her innocence. Despite the allegations, she has expressed a willingness to cooperate with the investigation, which has already seen her home subjected to a raid by the National Prosecution Authority’s Investigating Unit.

Reacting to the unfolding events, ANC First Deputy Secretary-General Nomvula Mokonyane emphasized Mapisa-Nqakula’s right to explore all legal avenues concerning the charges against her, while also urging her to adhere to both legal and ANC organisational processes. Mokonyane’s remarks were made during a commemorative event in Soweto for Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

In her resignation statement, Mapisa-Nqakula underscored her decision as a move to protect the integrity of the Parliament and not an admission of guilt. “I have made this conscious decision in order to dedicate my time and focus to deal with the recently announced investigation against me,” she stated, emphasising her lifelong commitment to the ANC and her dedication to upholding the principles of the South African constitution.

Delivering her ruling, Judge Sulet Potterill stressed the implications of granting orders to prevent arrests, cautioning against undermining the criminal justice system. Potterill’s stance reflects the court’s position on maintaining the procedural integrity of legal processes in the face of serious allegations.
