Northern Cape Town
By Thobeka Makume
Residents of Brandvlei, a small town in the Northern Cape, experienced a significant tremor early Sunday morning. The earthquake, which struck at approximately 2:51 AM local time, registered a magnitude of 5.3 and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres.
The epicentre was located about 101 kilometres west of Brandvlei. Despite the quake’s strength, there have been no reports of injuries or significant structural damage. However, the tremors were widely felt across the region, with over 2,100 individuals reporting the event.
In a separate incident, reports have emerged of a possible earthquake affecting parts of Paarl in the Western Cape on the same morning. Details regarding the magnitude, depth, and exact timing of this event are currently unconfirmed. Historically, Paarl and its surrounding areas have experienced seismic activity, though typically of lower magnitudes.
South Africa is not commonly associated with frequent or severe earthquakes. However, the country does experience occasional seismic events, particularly in regions with historical mining activities. The Council for Geoscience (CGS) monitors and reports on such events through the South African National Seismograph Network.
Residents in affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and report any structural damages to local authorities. While no immediate aftershocks have been reported, it’s prudent to stay informed through official channels for any updates or safety advisories.
For those interested in real-time updates on seismic activity in South Africa, the CGS provides detailed information and resources on their official website.
In the meantime, residents can take precautionary measures to ensure safety during such events, including securing heavy furniture, identifying safe spots within homes, and having emergency kits prepared.
