The Northern Cape Police, as part of the illicit mining multi-disciplinary team, launched Operation Vala Umgodi, targeting drug-related crimes in Postmasburg. The operation, led by intelligence-driven information, resulted in the arrest of nine men aged between 20 and 48 for various offences, including illegal drug possession, ammunition, and suspected stolen property.

Sergeant Molefi Shemane, the police spokesperson, detailed the outcome of the Friday raid, stating, “Information led to the raiding of identified drug houses on Friday, 03 May 2024. During the operation, nine (9) male suspects between the ages of 20 and 48 years old were arrested for illegal possession of suspected drugs with an estimated street value of R22 000, possession of ammunition and possession of suspected stolen goods.” The haul from the operation included not just drugs, but also cash believed to be proceeds of crime, mobile phones, and worrying items like suspected stolen South African Defence Force (SANDF) uniforms, along with gas pistols and ammunition.

The crackdown signifies a major victory for local law enforcement in their ongoing battle against drug-related crimes, highlighting the effectiveness of their intelligence-driven operations. The confiscated items, especially the ammunition and SANDF uniforms, underscore the potential link between drug trades to more dangerous criminal activities.

Awaiting their day in court, the arrested individuals are expected to face charges soon at the Postmasburg Magistrates Court. This step marks the beginning of legal proceedings against the suspects, caught in the act of undermining the safety and security of the community through their illicit activities.

Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, the Provincial Commissioner, praised the team’s efforts in making the streets safer by removing drugs and weapons. She emphasised the importance of community involvement in crime prevention, stating, “We encourage communities to continue reporting illegal activities to the police.” Her call to action reinforces the critical role that public cooperation plays in combating crime and maintaining law and order.
