Northern Cape Police Arrest 429 Suspects in Safer Festive Season Operations

Northern Cape Police

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape has arrested 429 suspects during the ongoing Safer Festive Season operations, a continuation of Operation Shanela. These arrests span a range of charges, including illegal possession of uncut diamonds, illicit mining, murder, rape, illegal dealing in liquor, dealing in drugs, undocumented persons, assaults, malicious damage to property, contravention of protection orders, housebreaking and theft, theft out of motor vehicles, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

High-Density Operations Across the Province

The operations encompassed numerous vehicle control points and static roadblocks conducted across the province on both national and secondary roads. During these activities, law enforcement stopped 6,368 vehicles and searched 16,988 individuals. Compliance inspections were executed at second-hand dealers and liquor premises, as well as mines, farms, and both formal and informal businesses. The police confiscated firearms, cellphones, dangerous weapons, large volumes of alcoholic beverages, mandrax, tik, dagga, and money believed to be proceeds of crime.

Zero-Tolerance Approach for New Year’s Eve

Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, the Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, assured the public that operations will continue unabated during New Year celebrations and beyond. She reiterated that a zero-tolerance approach will be adopted, particularly concerning the abuse and misuse of alcohol. Crimes committed against women and children will be vigorously policed, with authorities on high alert at parks, taverns, social gatherings, and pleasure resorts.

Community Compliance and Road Safety

Communities are urged to adhere to by-laws pertaining to the discharging of fireworks and illegal spinning, with the warning that all perpetrators will face the full might of the law. Road safety will be prioritized, and motorists are cautioned that they can expect to be detained if found transgressing the rules of the road. The authority of the state will be enforced as the province heads into 2025.

Operation Shanela’s Impact

Operation Shanela, the multi-disciplinary, intelligence-driven high-density crime prevention and combating initiative, has had a significant impact in stabilizing and fighting crime across all five districts of the Northern Cape. The high-density operations, which commenced on 16 December 2024, have executed numerous actions such as regular stop and searches, vehicle checkpoints, roadblocks, cordon and searches, high-visibility patrols including foot patrols, tracing of wanted suspects with a focus on the apprehension of murder and rape suspects, and compliance inspections at liquor outlets, businesses, and second-hand goods dealers.

Provincial Leadership’s Commitment

Lieutenant General Otola applauded the joint efforts of law enforcement agencies, Community Police Forums, and Community in Blue Patrollers that led to the arrest of criminals. She also appreciated the efforts of police members and reiterated that SAPS is ready to keep the province safe, secure, and peaceful during this festive season and beyond.

Public Cooperation Encouraged

The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to SAPS Crime Stop at 08600 10111, via the MySAPS app, or by informing a trusted friend or security personnel. This collaborative effort between law enforcement and the community is essential in maintaining safety and security throughout the festive season and into the new year.
