North West Urged to Support Construction of Bridges in Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality

Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality

The Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality in the North West has recently received support and funding from the national Department of Public Works and Roads for the construction of pedestrian and vehicular bridges. With an allocated budget of R130 million, the project aims to refurbish and build bridges in rural communities.

The decision to prioritize Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality came after severe floods devastated the province in 2021/22. Following assessments conducted by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the Department of Public Works, 35 pedestrian bridges were identified for refurbishment. However, due to financial constraints, only 12 bridges will be constructed in the current financial year.

The North West’s permanent delegates to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) recently received an update from the provincial department regarding road conditions, refurbishment plans, and construction progress. They were informed that the SANDF has established sites for the refurbishment of six bridges, with a commitment to completing them by the end of the second quarter of this year.

The delegates expressed appreciation for the progress made, particularly highlighting the construction of a bridge in Kraaipan village. This development is highly anticipated by residents who have long awaited infrastructural improvements in their area.

The provincial department further informed the delegation that the necessary construction materials for the six bridges have been delivered as of September 7, 2023. These bridges will include two vehicular bridges in Kraaipan village, two pedestrian bridges in Montshioastad, and one vehicular bridge in Masutlhe village.
