North West Premier Kaobitsa Maape on Medical Leave in Thailand, Acting Premier Sworn In
Premier Kaobitsa Bushy Maape of the North West province has temporarily stepped down from his duties to seek medical treatment abroad, a statement from the Office of the Premier confirmed on Monday. According to official reports, Premier Maape will be out of the country until the end of January 2024 following his doctor’s recommendation for further medical care in Thailand.
In his absence, the province’s Management, Executive Council Member (MEC) for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Nono Maloyi, has been appointed to serve as the acting Premier. Maloyi was officially sworn in by Judge President Ronald Hendricks of the North West Division, ensuring a seamless transition of power and continued governance within the province.
The ascent of Maloyi to the acting position has been officially communicated to the highest levels of provincial and national leadership. “A formal notification of Premier Maape’s travel has been sent to both the President and the Speaker of the North West provincial legislature,” the Office of the Premier disclosed, following the necessary protocols and maintaining transparency with the public and government officials alike.
This marks the second time Premier Maape has had to take a leave of absence due to health-related issues. He previously returned to his role in November of the past year after recovering from a minor orthopaedic surgery he underwent in June 2023. Although he resumed his duties, his medical team has since recommended ongoing rest and treatment, culminating in his current visit to Thailand for medical care.
The Office of the Premier assured the public that during Premier Maape’s recovery period, all necessary steps were being taken to ensure the stability and functioning of the provincial government. The statement further expressed wishes for his swift recovery and a safe return to his official responsibilities.
Acting Premier Maloyi is expected to maintain the duties of the North West Premier until Maape’s return. As the head of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Maloyi’s experience in governmental affairs is seen as an asset to his temporary.
