An eight-year-old girl from Ramosadi village near Mahikeng, North West, has tragically passed away after allegedly consuming contaminated snacks purchased from a local house. Her 10-year-old sister, who also consumed the same snacks, remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a local hospital.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh, the incident occurred on Friday morning when both girls began experiencing severe stomach aches at school. Teachers promptly transported them to a nearby clinic, where the younger sibling succumbed later that afternoon. The elder sister was subsequently admitted to the ICU for further treatment.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the girls had purchased the snacks from a house in their village shortly before falling ill. Authorities are currently probing the origin and content of the snacks and assessing whether the vendor was operating legally. The Mmabatho police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing.

This incident coincides with a visit by the Minister of Co-operative Governance & Traditional Affairs, Velenkosi Hlabisa, to an eight-year-old boy who has been hospitalized for over a week after allegedly consuming contaminated snacks from a spaza shop. The shop in question has since been shut down.

In light of these events, police have urged parents and schools to exercise increased caution regarding the sources of food provided to children. The community is advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious food vendors to the authorities.
