Montshiwa Location, Mahikeng – Acting North West Provincial Commissioner, Patrick Asaneng, has condemned the recent arson attack on a murder suspect’s residence in Montshiwa Location.
The incident followed the arrest of a 44-year-old man, alleged to have fatally assaulted his 35-year-old girlfriend in the early hours of Saturday morning. While police were processing the crime scene, a group of community members demanded that the suspect be handed over to them. Officers, adhering to protocol, transported the suspect to the police station.
Later, at approximately 10:30 AM, authorities received reports of a fire at the suspect’s residence on Maiphetlho Street. Upon arrival, they confirmed the house had been set ablaze. A case of arson has been registered, and investigations are ongoing, with no arrests made at this time.
Major General Asaneng expressed deep concern over the community’s actions, stating that such vigilantism undermines the rule of law. He urged residents to refrain from acts of mob justice, emphasizing that these actions are illegal and counterproductive to justice.
Police spokesperson Mpho Manyoba reiterated this sentiment, highlighting the importance of allowing law enforcement to conduct thorough investigations and ensure due process is followed.
Authorities continue to appeal to the public for any information that may assist in the ongoing arson investigation.
