Housing Projects
By Karabo Marifi
The North West Department of Human Settlements has secured an additional R150 million to enhance its housing development initiatives, following the adoption of the second Adjustment Appropriation Bill for the 2024/2025 fiscal year by the North West Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committee on Premier and Finance.
Addressing Budget Constraints and Enhancing Oversight
Committee Chairperson Nathan Oliphant highlighted that this supplementary funding aims to mitigate the adverse effects of previous budget cuts on various housing projects. He emphasized the necessity for stringent oversight to ensure the efficient utilization of these resources, stating, “As the department has been negatively affected by significant budget cuts, which affected various projects, we welcome the adjustment.”
Strategic Allocation of Funds
The additional R150 million is designated to bolster the Informal Settlements Upgrading Partnership Grant (ISUPG), increasing its allocation from R357.135 million to R507.135 million. This strategic investment is expected to facilitate the department in fulfilling its obligations related to the informal settlements upgrading grant, thereby improving living conditions in these communities.
Commitment to Service Delivery
Oliphant expressed satisfaction with the Provincial Treasury’s due diligence regarding the department’s capacity to effectively utilize the appropriated funds. He underscored the importance of translating these financial resources into tangible outcomes, remarking that citizens desire concrete results, particularly in the form of decent housing.
Provincial Housing Initiatives
In his recent State of the Province Address, North West Premier Kagiso Lazarus Mokgosi announced plans to construct 3,555 houses in the upcoming financial year. This comprehensive initiative includes completing stalled projects, providing first home financing, and implementing an asbestos removal programme. Additionally, the province aims to deliver 500 housing units in mining towns, with a budget allocation of R90.5 million, reflecting a sustained commitment to addressing housing needs in these areas.
