North West concludes marking of 2023 matric exams

As the class of 2021 will be expected to sit for the National Senior Certificate examination, President Cyril Ramaphosa said he is proud of the nearly 900 000 candidates and this is an important marker for the future of our nation.

By Thys Khiba – Marking of the 2023 matric exams papers in the North West province has been concluded on Friday, 22 December 2023. This year’s exam period begin on 30 October nationwide and concluded on 6 December.

The North West Department of Education had 20 marking centres that are now officially closed down. The department assigned 3 256 markers and 522 marker assistants.

The MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi thanked markers who sacrificed their time and took part in the marking process.

“On behalf of the department I would like to thank each and every Marker and Assistant Marker who sacrificed their time to mark the Grade 12 papers. We are already grateful to our educators who decided to share their knowledge with us.

“I wish all educators a safe journey as they return back home. As the North West province we remain hopeful that we will be amongst the top provinces in the country when results are released,” said Motsumi.

According to the departmental spokesperson Mphata Molokwane, thousands of markers returned home “after performing performing a meticulous job.”

The province is expected to host the Matric Release function at Sun City Resort on Friday, 19 January 2024.

Meanwhile the Free State MEC for Education, Makalo Mohale is also expected to release the provincial results on 19 January at the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, campus in Bloemfontein.

The province has set a target to achieve a 90% pass rate overall, and score 40% bachelor passes to surpass 2022’s 88.5% overall pass rate.

The Free State province had 2 758 markers that were assigned to do the job at various marking centres.

The Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is expected to release the results nationwide on 18 January 2024.
