Greenhouse Tunnels
By Mpho Moloi
The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has reinforced its commitment to sustainable farming and food security with a significant investment in local agriculture. On Friday, 14 February 2025, MEC Madoda Sambatha officially handed over greenhouse tunnels worth R2.5 million to JT Farm Fresh, a small-scale farming enterprise based in Bokfontein, within the Madibeng Local Municipality.
This initiative, which forms part of the Provincial Accelerated Service Delivery Programme (Thuntsa Lerole Reloaded), aims to empower emerging farmers, boost crop production, and stimulate economic growth in the province.
Boosting Agricultural Sustainability Through Greenhouse Technology
The handing over of the greenhouse tunnels marks a critical step in modernizing small-scale farming in the North West Province. JT Farm Fresh, which specialises in vegetable production, will now benefit from climate-controlled farming, enabling year-round cultivation and improved crop quality.
The initiative is expected to enhance food security, create employment opportunities, and provide a reliable source of fresh produce to local communities.
MEC Madoda Sambatha highlighted the strategic importance of this investment, emphasizing the long-term benefits for the region.
“By investing in small-scale farmers like JT Farm Fresh, we are building a strong foundation for agriculture that can withstand challenges, such as climate change and rising food prices. These greenhouse tunnels will help improve production efficiency and sustainability, ultimately benefiting the entire community,” Sambatha stated.
JT Farm Fresh Welcomes the Investment
The owners of JT Farm Fresh, including Jabulani Galubetse, expressed profound gratitude for the government’s intervention.
“This support will significantly enhance our operations, allowing us to scale up our production and meet the increasing demand for fresh produce in the region,” said Galubetse.
The newly installed greenhouse tunnels will provide protection from extreme weather conditions, ensuring higher yields and greater crop consistency. This is a game-changer for smallholder farmers, who often face unpredictable weather patterns that threaten productivity.
The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has been at the forefront of supporting emerging farmers, recognizing that investment in agriculture is essential for economic growth and poverty alleviation.
Thuntsa Lerole Reloaded: Accelerating Service Delivery in Rural Areas
The greenhouse project aligns with the Thuntsa Lerole Reloaded Programme, a provincial service delivery initiative aimed at fast-tracking economic development in rural and agricultural communities.
This programme focuses on:
• Improving access to resources for small-scale farmers.
• Strengthening food security measures.
• Providing financial and infrastructural support to agricultural enterprises.
• Creating employment opportunities in the agricultural sector.
By partnering with local farmers, the provincial government is empowering communities to become self-sufficient, reducing dependency on food imports and enhancing local production.
MEC Sambatha reiterated that the North West Province remains committed to fostering agricultural resilience by investing in emerging farmers.
“Our goal is to create an environment where small-scale farmers can thrive. With the right infrastructure and support, we can transform the agricultural sector into a key driver of economic growth in our province,” he added.
Enhancing Food Security and Economic Growth
The investment in JT Farm Fresh is not just about increasing food production; it is also about securing the livelihoods of local farmers and ensuring that communities have access to fresh, nutritious food.
The North West Province has long identified agriculture as one of the most viable economic sectors, and initiatives like these aim to position local farmers for long-term success.
The MEC assured that the department will continue working closely with emerging farmers, equipping them with skills, tools, and infrastructure to compete effectively in the agricultural industry.
“We are proud of our efforts to build sustainable farming enterprises. The success of farmers like JT Farm Fresh will inspire others to invest in modern farming practices, ultimately strengthening our agricultural sector,” said Sambatha.
A Model for Small-Scale Farming Transformation
The greenhouse handover at JT Farm Fresh is a blueprint for future agricultural investments across the North West Province. With the right support, smallholder farmers can contribute meaningfully to the economy, create jobs, and help reduce food insecurity.
Key Benefits of the Greenhouse Initiative:
✔ Year-round crop production, ensuring a consistent food supply.
✔ Increased yields due to better climate control and pest management.
✔ Improved food security for the surrounding communities.
✔ Job creation and skills development in the local farming sector.
✔ Reduced reliance on seasonal rainfall, boosting agricultural productivity.
MEC Sambatha emphasized that this project will serve as a pilot for similar initiatives aimed at transforming the rural agricultural economy.
“This is just the beginning. We are committed to rolling out more infrastructure projects that support sustainable farming. Our vision is to make the North West Province an agricultural powerhouse,” he concluded.
