Nono Maloyi Set to Steer North West, to Deliver SOPA During Maape’s Medical Leave

North West Premier, Kaobitsa Bushy Maape, has exercised his constitutional prerogative by invoking Chapter 6, Section 131(1)(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

This section has facilitated the appointment of MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Nono Maloyi, as the Acting Premier for a specified duration. Maloyi’s term as Acting Premier, effective from 19 February to 10 March 2024, is a result of Premier Maape’s temporary departure to seek medical treatment abroad.

On the eve of his appointment, Sunday, 18 February, Nono Maloyi took the oath of office, which was administered by the Honorable Judge President of the North West Division, Ronald Hendricks. “I pledge to serve the people of North West with utmost dedication and to uphold the responsibilities entrusted upon me during this interim period,” Maloyi professed after being sworn in.

Earlier this year, the health of Premier Maape took a turn, necessitating intermittent leaves of absence. With his well-being as a priority, Maape’s office released a statement, confirming his departure to Thailand for further medical attention.

“Heeding the recommendation of his medical team, Premier Maape will be out of South Africa until the end of January 2024. We wish him a speedy recovery,” relayed the spokesperson from the Office of the Premier.

The absence of Premier Maape extends beyond his health-related hiatus, coinciding with the annual delivery of the state of the province address (SOPA) set for Tuesday, 20 February 2024. In his stead, Acting Premier Maloyi will assume the mantle and deliver the much-anticipated SOPA.
