Non-Provisional Taxpayers Face Final Deadline Today: SARS Urges Submissions to Avoid Penalties
South Africa’s tax season for non-provisional taxpayers wraps up today, with the South African Revenue Service calling on everyone to file their annual income-tax returns by midnight on Monday, 20 October 2025.
Commissioner Edward Kieswetter has reminded people of the deadline, stressing how easy the process has been made this year. With millions already filed, the focus is on the last group to get their forms in before facing fines and extra charges.
This final push comes as the country works to build a stronger economy through fair tax collection. Taxes help fund key services like schools, hospitals, and roads, making timely filing important for everyone.
SARS Commissioner’s Reminder to Taxpayers
Last week, Kieswetter urged non-provisional taxpayers to submit their returns on time. “The revenue service has made every effort to simplify and support the filing process,” he said. Tools like better online platforms, auto-assessments for some people, and helpful phone lines have made things smoother.
The filing season for those not auto-assessed ran from 15 July to 20 October 2025, giving plenty of time. Auto-assessments happened between 1 and 14 July, helping many skip the full process. Kieswetter thanked those who filed early, noting how it helps the system run well.
Filing Statistics: Millions Done, but Hundreds of Thousands Left
By last week, 7,900,531 non-provisional taxpayers had filed their returns, leaving more than 854,408 still to go. In the 2024 tax year, over 6.7 million filed, including auto-assessed ones, showing a steady rise in compliance.
These numbers show most people are on top of their taxes, but the last group needs to act fast. SARS expects a rush today, so online filing is the best way to avoid long waits.
Consequences of Missing the Deadline
Kieswetter warned that not filing on time is a serious matter. “Failure to submit a return by the deadline is a serious offence, and non-compliance can lead to administrative penalties and interest charges,” he said. Penalties start at R250 a month for late filers, and can grow based on income.
SARS is focused on voluntary compliance but will take action against those who ignore their duties. “As part of our strategic focus to encourage voluntary compliance and enforce the law, SARS will continue to identify and act against those who do not meet their tax obligations,” Kieswetter added. This helps build a fair system where everyone pays their share.
Not filing can also block access to services like loans or jobs that need tax clearance. It is key for funding public needs, as Kieswetter noted: “This commitment to compliance plays a vital role in building a capable state and funding essential public services.”
How to Submit Your Tax Return Today
SARS has made filing easy with online tools. Use the eFiling website or the SARS MobiApp to submit from home. If you need help, call the helpline or visit a branch, but online is faster to beat the deadline.
For those auto-assessed, check if your details are right and accept or edit by today if needed. Keep records like IRP5 forms, medical aid proofs, and bank statements handy.
If you owe tax, pay on time to avoid interest. Refunds usually come within 72 hours if everything checks out.
