Eskom Loadshedding

ESKOM ON LOADSHEDDING

By Thabo Mosia – Eskom has announced that there will be no loadshedding on Voting Day, 29 May 2024. This decision follows a period of 58 uninterrupted days without loadshedding, a positive outcome of sustained improvements in the reliability of Eskom’s generation fleet.

In a statement released on Friday, 24 May 2024, the power utility confirmed, “We are pleased to announce that loadshedding remains suspended until further notice, which includes the period of voting day on Wednesday 29 May 2024.”

Extended Suspension of Loadshedding

The nation has experienced one of its longest periods without loadshedding since the stretch from 5 December 2021 to 2 February 2022. This remarkable achievement is credited to Eskom’s Generation Operational Recovery Plan, initiated in March 2023, coupled with extensive planned maintenance. These efforts have significantly enhanced both the availability and reliability of the generation fleet.

Reduction in Unplanned Outages

The improvements are reflected in the Unplanned Capacity Loss Factor (UCLF), which has dropped to 28.37% for the current financial year to date (1 April 2024 to 23 May 2024). This is a significant reduction from the 35.5% recorded during the same period last year.

EAF Improvement

The year-to-date Energy Availability Factor (EAF) has improved to 60.61%, marking an 8.2% increase from the same period last year, when the EAF stood at 52.4%. This enhancement is largely attributed to a 7.00% decrease in unplanned outages of generation units, with the daily EAF maintaining an average of 61.3%.

Planned Maintenance and Reduced OCT Usage

Eskom’s planned maintenance currently stands at 4 769MW, in line with its winter maintenance plans. Additionally, the utilisation of Open-Cycle Gas Turbines (OCTs) has seen a significant reduction when compared to the past two years. From 1 April 2024 to 23 May 2024, Eskom spent R1.51 billion on OCTs, producing 209.43 GWh, a 75% decrease from the R6.1 billion and 979.90 GWh recorded during the same period last year.

Winter 2024 Outlook

The outlook for Winter 2024 remains positive, with expectations that unplanned outages will not exceed 15 500MW. Loadshedding is anticipated to be limited to Stage 2. By Monday, 27 May 2024, Eskom plans to return 4 260MW of generating capacity to service. The evening peak demand for Friday, 24 May 2024, is projected at 27 545MW.

Appeal for Public Cooperation

Eskom expressed concern over recent disruptions at several power stations and urges the public to avoid actions that could further impact the power supply. Public cooperation is essential for maintaining reliable electricity.

The utility also appreciates the efforts of those participating in Demand-Side Management (DSM) during Energy-Saving Month, encouraging the public to switch off geysers and pool pumps during peak hours from 17:00 to 21:00. This practice helps lower demand and reduces pressure on the power system, contributing to the sustained suspension of loadshedding.
