RTMC Urges young people to be cautious on the road

Pre-Festive Season Crackdown

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has announced the arrest of nine traffic officers in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal in a pre-festive season peak travel crackdown on fraud and corruption. The arrests were made as part of efforts to ensure a safe and corruption-free environment on the roads during the holiday season.

Two officers from the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) in Gauteng were arrested for soliciting a bribe of R1,500 from a taxi driver. The swift action taken by the driver in alerting the RTMC’s National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit (NTACU) led to a successful sting operation and the subsequent arrest of the officers.

In a separate incident, seven officers from the provincial Road Traffic Inspectorate and the Newcastle municipality in KwaZulu-Natal were arrested following complaints from the public regarding the conduct of traffic officers on the road. An undercover operation conducted by NTACU and the Hawks resulted in the arrest of the officers on charges of fraud and corruption.

These arrests highlight the ongoing battle against corruption in South Africa, particularly within law enforcement agencies. The RTMC emphasized the importance of citizens reporting any incidents of corruption they witness or experience to ensure that corrupt officials are brought to justice.

The NTACU continues to work tirelessly to root out corrupt officials and restore public trust in traffic law enforcement. The RTMC has taken a firm stance against fraud and corruption and will continue to investigate and prosecute those who engage in such activities without fear or favor.

Members of the public are encouraged to report suspected acts of fraud, corruption, and malfeasance to ntacu@rtmc.co.za or by WhatsApp to 083 293 7989.
