Eskom’s Matla Power Station
By Karabo Marifi
Nine people have been injured, one critically, following a transformer explosion at Eskom’s Matla Power Station in Mpumalanga. The incident, which occurred around 5pm on Thursday, has raised concerns over safety at the facility and the potential impact on South Africa’s power supply.
Details of the Incident
In a statement released by the power utility on Thursday evening, Eskom confirmed the explosion occurred at Unit 6 of the Matla Power Station. As a precautionary measure, Unit 5 was taken offline to ensure the safety of employees and contractors on-site.
“Our technical teams are on-site assessing the situation and will continue to do so throughout the evening and into [today],” the statement read. Eskom assured the public that the suspension of load shedding remains unchanged, with regular updates to be provided as investigations progress.
Immediate Response and Medical Assistance
Eskom’s Group Executive for Generation, Bheki Nxumalo, expressed the company’s commitment to the wellbeing of the injured individuals.
“Our first thoughts are with those who have been injured, and we are ensuring they get the medical attention they need. All emergency protocols have been activated,” said Nxumalo.
Emergency response teams were quickly deployed to the scene, ensuring that the injured received prompt medical attention. Those affected were transported to nearby healthcare facilities for further treatment.
Safety Precautions at Matla Power Station
The explosion has prompted a temporary shutdown of Unit 5 at the Matla Power Station. This measure was taken to prioritise the safety of all personnel and prevent further damage to the facility.
Eskom’s technical teams remain on-site to assess the extent of the damage and determine the root cause of the incident. Preliminary findings will guide the utility’s next steps in managing the situation and restoring operations at the affected units.
Impact on Power Supply
Despite the explosion, Eskom confirmed that the suspension of load shedding will not be affected at this stage. This reassurance aims to alleviate public concerns over potential disruptions to the country’s already strained power supply.
Matla Power Station, a coal-fired facility located in Mpumalanga, is a critical component of Eskom’s generation capacity. Any significant disruptions at the station could have a ripple effect on the utility’s ability to meet electricity demand nationwide.
